Safer Raya

Safer homes while you are away...Chief Inspector Sulaiman Baputty handing out the Balik Kampung form to a resident at the SS18 Ramadhan stalls. Looking on is MPSJ councilor Dr KM Loi.

RESIDENTS going away for the Hari Raya holidays can sign up early with the police to arrange for regular police visits to their homes during the coming festive break.

It's a simple task to have the men in blue visit homes left vacant during the festive holiday.

All residents have to do is fill up the Balik Kampung forms (which are also available at all the police stations) providing details of their trip away and when they will be back.

Once completed, just drop it off at the police station nearest to home.

During the time a house owner is away, police personnel will make regular visits to the house and dropping a visitation slip in the letterbox.

SS17 Subang Jaya head of station Chief Inspector Sulaiman Baputty said residents are advised to take advantage of this service by the police.

"This service is free. All you have to do is fill up the form and drop it off at the police station nearest to your home."

"All information provided is confidential," he said after distributing forms to residents who were busy shopping for their food to break fast.

Statistics over the past few years have shown a significant success in keeping crime rates down during the festive season with this Balik Kampung program led by the police.

"Residents should take advantage of this extra measure to keep their homes safe while they are away," MPSJ councilor Dr KM Loi said.

A little boy fights for his life

How often do we see a child/ children playing just outside his/her house in our neighbourhood without supervision and without a care in the world? Yes, traffic is now minimised because of our Gated and Guarded scheme....
BUT it doesn't mean that parents should let their guard down with regards to their children's safety!!!!

Please read the following news article extracted from The Star ( July 5th, 2010 )

SUBANG JAYA: A little boy is fighting for his life after suffering serious head and body injuries in an accident involving a speeding van outside his home in Saujana Puchong, near here, on Saturday night.

Danial Gabrial Abdullah, who will turn five in December, is believed to have been flung more than 10m due to the impact.

Worse still, the van allegedly rolled over his leg as the child laid motionless

Doctors at the Serdang Hospital later told his mother Nor Saliha Mining, 25, that Danial suffered a cracked skull, internal brain haemorrhage and a broken ankle.

Part of his scalp was scraped off and his left ear was torn off. He has been warded at the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Nor Saliha lodged a police report at the Bukit Puchong police station where she learnt that the driver had also lodged a report at the station.

Her husband technician Mohd Brian Gabrial, 34, who was at work at the time of the incident, rushed home when he heard about it.

“When I arrived, my wife had accompanied Daniel to the hospital. I was shaking on seeing the pool of blood on the road,” he said.

Recalling the horrifying incident, Nor Saliha said it happened at around 9pm. She had told Danial not to go out of the house while she looked for the cable to a laptop for him to play with.

“Despite my warning, he went out.

“Then, he opened the gate and stepped out to the road,” she sobbed, alleging that the speeding vehicle, with the words Polis Bantuan on its sides, slammed into her child.

She claimed that the van did not stop and as it continued to drive away, it also rolled over Gabrial’s leg.

The child’s screams drew the attention of the neighbours. Nor Saliha said she shouted at the driver who briefly stopped and stepped out of the vehicle.

The driver, however, did not stop to look at the boy. He got back into the van and drove off.

Nor Saliha said that the driver returned about five minutes later, accompanied by another person.

She said: “The driver’s friend took a look at my son but as he too tried to move away, my neighbours stopped him. The van driver sped off.”

The housewife and mother of two other children – a two-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl – said her neighbours helped to rush Danial to hospital.

Fighting Corruption starts with you!

by Hannah Yeoh ( derived from SJ Echo )

I have observed the Hulu Selangor by-election and its results with much interest. While we detest the practice of dishing out goodies in exchange for votes and large amount of money used to buy the hearts of the voters or more bluntly phrased “to buy votes”, I cannot help but feel that the voters there are equally guilty of the same offence they allege the politicians to have committed.

I have spoken about this before in 2008, corruption takes both hands to clap. The immoral transaction involves both the giver and the recipient.

Non-election season: some citizens’ give and some politicians receive
Election season: some politicians give and some citizens receive

Both cannot cry innocence. That’s why Malaysia is where it is today. Plagued by corruption and unable to untangle the mess. Where do you start? Local council? Judiciary? Police force? Immigration? MACC? Driving schools? Or in your own car when your children are watching you when stopped by a traffic police?
Many expect others to practice transparency and accountability but when it comes to themselves, a lower or different standard applies.

The love of money is the root of all evil. Bribery cannot be tolerated. There are many ways to solve an issue but we must take the higher way, the principled way and the less travelled way. Even if it means taking a longer time to solve it, we must not partake in bribery. No compromise on short-cuts. Whether it is to settle summons or to expedite an application, do not bribe. Don’t offer it. Don’t take it.

Corruption does not always involve large amount of money. It can come in the most subtle form. You may escape the eyes of the law. You may escape the eyes of the public but you can’t escape God’s. We will reap what we sow. If we continue to sow into corruption, our nation will continue to reap of it.

All the systems in this country require an overhaul. Every Malaysian has to play a part in setting Malaysia free from corruption. We should have a tagline: ‘Selamatkan Malaysia daripada rasuah’ or ‘Rasuah membunuh!’ Yes, corruption kills. It kills the judiciary. It kills integrity. It kills our hope of becoming a first world country. It kills your children’s future.

Only righteousness alone can exalt Malaysia. I plead with you, on behalf of my generation and the younger ones: stop this deadly trend. Stop it the next time you are tempted. Leave behind a proud inheritance for us. A united community

Recently my office co-sponsored a bowling get-together for JKP Zone 3 (USJ 2 – USJ 15) at Summit. I was most impressed with the turn out. There was a wide representation of each USJ section in Zone 3 and each section sent a team. There were senior folks, teenagers, young working adults, men, ladies and grandparents. Children with special needs also participated in the bowling event and they scored higher points than me. Well done kids! MPSJ, police and bomba also participated and interacted with the residents.

In an urban community like DUN Subang Jaya, residents meet only when there’s a protest or a public hearing. It is important for residents to also meet others at social events, within their neighbourhood and also those adjoining. The community spirit present that day was evident. USJ 11 residents were making friends with those from Good Year Court 7 in USJ 14 and they have never met prior to this!

A united community will bring strength to all the causes they champion. Only when there is unity, a matter can be resolved amicably. Let me encourage every resident group to hear out the opinion of others in the community, respect it even though there is disagreement and brainstorm to see how we can move forward together.

The recent dialogue with Menteri Besar on Taman Subang Ria is a good example on how a good, orderly dialogue session can help chart a way forward for the community. Thank you to all who attended!

The team in the next lane really put pressure on us

After the first round, we found ourselves trailing the majority of teams by more than 60 pin falls... the team in the lane next to us were really applying pressure with their consistent strikes and spares; while we were busy doing our GREEN part by assisting the bowling maintanence guys to 'cuci longkang'.

very serious bowlers

The 2nd game was a little better and having completed our game, we proceeded to check out the other teams' scores... Conclusion... Ok lah, we are doing a little better than some of the other teams

little did we know, we would be coming home with consolation trophies

The Results were then announced! " and in 6th Place, USJ 3/1 RESIDENT ASSOCIATION!!!!! "

Huh??? Did we hear right?? That's us!

Photos pinjam from 11/3 Jeffery Khoo with our Thanks !!!

We left USJ Summit Bowling Alley that evening with lots of new friends, a small consolation trophy each and a little pride in our hearts. Many thanks to ADUN YB Hannah Yeoh and MPSJ Zon 3 Councillor Rajiv Rishyakaran for a great day of friendship and fun. We look forward to next year's event.

Change of the Security Company

Dear residents,

In an effort to improve the current GnG system operation in our area, we recently conducted a performance appraisal and spoke to some of our residents. The feedback received was generally positive; however, there were some comments on the performance of the security guards is below our level of expectation. Despite speaking to the security company we do not see much improvement. As such the committee has decided to change the security company with effect from February 2010.

The new company is experienced and has assured us better service. Note that the rates for the new guards are higher; however we will not be increasing the monthly rate at the moment. We expect more residents to join in and existing members to pay up their monthly subscriptions to your street representatives immediately.

During the changeover, we do expect some teething problems and request all our residents to be patient and tolerate some inconveniences that may occur.

Closure of Gate A
Gate A at Jalan USJ 3/1 will be closed from midnight to 5:00am daily so that the guards can man other gates and carry out additional patrol in the night.

Our Children's safety - Lightning

Most of us would have probably heard about the 5 youths who were struck down by lightning at USJ 6 basketball court last Sunday evening at 5:30pm, of which one of them was killed. The deceased, a 20-year-old man from USJ2 was the only son amongst the siblings in his family.

In spite of this recent tragedy, it is shocking to see scores of children up and about at our own 3/1 Padang even when it is evident with the sound of thunder and flashes of lightning across the sky. Lightning in open fields kills more people than any other outdoor place.

With the school holidays on, parents should take heed to be attentive and advise their children of the apparent danger of being out in the open during this rainy season.

Here are some things you will want to advise your loved ones, to minimize risks if they're caught in the open during a thunderstorm:

a. Avoid being the tallest object around .. get as low as you can, but don't lie prone on the ground.

b. It also is unwise to be near the tallest object around, like an isolated tree. Sheltering from the rain under a tree is often a factor in people being struck.

c. There is no "warning sign" that will tell you reliably that lightning is about to strike; don't depend on having your hair stand on end, or whatever.

d. The time from the flash to the thunder is a rough measure of how distant the lightning is. If you see a flash and count the seconds, five seconds corresponds to about a mile. However, there is no distance from a thunderstorm that is absolutely safe! If you can see the lightning, then you are under some threat.

e. You do not have to be directly hit by the lightning to be affected. Lightning can travel along the ground from a nearby strike to you. It can also jump from nearby objects that are struck.

f. Avoid being near fence lines and power lines that lead into areas where lightning is occurring. A flash can travel along the wires and jump to you.

Meeting updates at the USJ 3/1 Padang

The 3 Greens' Pro-tem committee would like to extend a big THANK YOU to our neighbours who came out for the Residents' meeting held at our USJ3/1 Padang on November 22, 2009.

Here are the highlights of what transpired during the meeting for those who could not attend:-

Recycling Day will be held on even months and 2nd Sunday of the month while the Health-walk will be held on monthly basis on Sunday morning. The dates will be posted on the blog. One further proposal was to organize a get-together for all residents.

Mr Rajiv Rishyakaran, our MPSJ ( Zon 3 ) Councillor was present and spoke on a number of issues pertaining to GnG concept. He explained that some of the guidelines are being tabled in the Parliament so that the implementation will be standardized and legalized.

Rajiv also encouraged us to organise Gotong-Royong, Recycling and suggested that we make a request with MPSJ to provide us with Composting Bins so that all waste greens can be recycled and the compost sold for income.

Some of the issues highlighted to him by our residents include:

a. The facilities in the Padang to be repaired. Some of the children’s facilities are damaged and are dangerous as some children have injured themselves. Also the basketball court has been badly worn-out - Dr.Kok ( USJ3/1E )

b. Mentality of some residents who leave rubbish outside the house. She mentioned that some residents leave the rubbish in their neighbour’s area and at time the Rubbish collector do not pick them up - Rashidah ( USJ 3/1G )

c. Excessive stray cats resulting in them becoming a nuisance and excreting in the house compound. Some enter the open window or door and feed on the food etc.

d. Foreign grass cutters – are they legal or registered with MPSJ. Many of them go around daily - KK Low

Mr Rajiv also highlighted on the pending extension of the LRT to Subang Jaya and thereon to Putra Heights.

The 3 Greens' pro-tem Committee thank Mr Rajiv for his attendance and contribution to our community.

Further suggestions put forth to the committee include:-

1. Frequent visitors (non-residents) to make laminated card with details of the name, car number and number of house being visited. The user to be charged so that we know they are valid visitor.

2. Pedestrian bridge over KESAS – to install gate and lock up the bridge. Proposed time to close was 1.00am to 6.00am. (To review the time).

3 Ms Pat of USJ 3/1D requested the closing of the gate near the padang to be locked at 10.30pm instead of 10.00pm due to her son coming back after tuition which finishes at 10.00pm. Also there were near accidents when she drove out of 3/1D into 3/1.

Reward for info on illegal dumping

THE Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) will reward informers of illegal dumping.

At the fullboard meeting yesterday, MPSJ president Datuk Adnan Md Ikshan said RM500 would be given to the public who tip off the council on those who dispose of rubbish illegally.

“Take note of the date and time, take a photo of the culprits and their lorries and then forward us the details,” he said.

The council will work with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to track down the culprits based on the information given.

It will give the reward after the culprits settled the fines.

Similarly, MPSJ will reward informants on heavy vehicles that knock down height gantries installed at various locations in the municipality.

Citing an incident that happened on Sunday night, Adnan said a heavy vehicle caused a gantry at USJ 16 to fall and later, a motorcyclist rammed into the gantry left lying on the road.

“It takes about RM6,000 to RM12,000 to make and install a gantry.

“If the culprit is caught, he will be slapped with a maximum fine of RM1,000 for vandalism. He also has to bear the repair costs,” Adnan said.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that the MPSJ Hypermedia Libraries located at Kompleks 3C and Serdang Raya are now open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30am to 5pm (except public holidays)

Crime Statistics for October 2009 - Balai Polis USJ

House Breakin (day/night)

A total of 54 reported cases (37 cases in September 2009)
The highest number of break-ins occurred in USJ2
If you live in a Community where your Neighbourhood Watch Group has employed Security Guards please do not be complacent. You have to be equally vigilant taking the usual precautions with your home. There were 2 reported breakin cases in the guarded USJ5 area.

Stolen Motor Vehicles (Cars/Vans/Lorries/Jeeps & Motorcycles)

32 cases of stolen Vehicles (27 cases in September 2009)
20 cases of stolen Motorcycles (19 cases in September 2009)
There are no specific areas where Vehicle thefts occur so please make sure you secure your cars.

Robberies

Robberies have dropped to 8 cases (18 cases in September 2009)In general the crime rate in USJ has remained stable, but has shifted to areas that do not have active Neighbourhood Watch Groups or GnG schemes.
The criminals will find less places to operate, which would make them more vulnerable to detection by the Polis, just make sure we are all vigilant to alert the Polis when we notice suspicious characters in our neighbourhood.

Polis advisory - we must fight back

We need to make sure that criminals are not even safe in their own homesIf you notice your neighbours behaving suspiciously i.e.

a) sleeps all day and is not around in the night
b) no apparent work regiment
c) coming back home at odd hours of the day
d) frequent visitors at odd hours of the day.
e) suspicious odours etc

Give the Polis a call and get them to investigate. There have been cases where information by alert neighbours have helped Polis in apprehending criminals in their homes.

Polis patrol with residents

The 3 Green Resident's Committee will be looking into incorporating our night patrol together with the Polis at the recommendation of Chief Inspector Tuan Loi Yew Lik. CI Loi can be contracted directly @ 012-4118843.

Burglars at USJ 2 foiled!

TWO suspected burglars who have been terrorising the USJ2 and neighbouring areas found themselves at the front end of a high-speed chase, with the police hot on their heels last Friday ( Nov 15, 2009 )

The suspects, both Chinese in their 20s and spotting shoulder length hair were spotted by a routine patrol in USJ2 trying to pry open a gate.

Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Zainal Rashid said the suspects fled in their stolen Toyota Wish with the police hot on their tail.

"The vehicle crashed into another oncoming Proton Persona at the USJ6-USJ9 junction. Unfortunately both suspects managed to flee on foot into the neighbouring area,"

Zainal said police found loot in the boot of the heavily tinted car, which was reported stolen in Wangsa Maju recently.

"We found an LCD plasma TV, bottles of liquor and tools normally used for house break-ins."

"We suspect the two were spotted trying to break into their second house for the day," he said, adding that police were trying to ascertain the location of the first house break-in.

Zainal said police were investigating the case and will be checking for thumb prints in the vehicle in an attempt to identify both the suspects.

"If you see anyone fitting the description of the two suspects, call the police," he said.

Top 10 Neighbours from Hell

Here's an interesting read from Star Metro ( Nov 12, 2009 )

1. One who tears down or renovates a house without the necessary approvals from the local authority.

2. One who leaves the house abandoned and locked up for years, leading to mosquitoes and other pests breeding on the premises.

3. One who creates loud disturbances and noise at odd times like the wee hours of the morning when everyone else is sound asleep.

4. One who rents out the home to a huge bunch of tenants, and tenants who become a nuisance.

5. One who converts a house from its intended purpose of habitation into a commercial food business without approval and permission from neighbours.

6. One who screams and rages loudly at his/her family members, disturbing the peace and causing discomfort.

7. One who leaves his/her pets unsupervised and uncontrolled.

8. One who intrudes into the neighbour’s parking space and builds a garden that encroaches into a public road/kerb.

9. One who renovates his own portion of the house without discussing with the neighbour and leaving the neighbour’s joint section looking ugly and detached.

10. One who blatantly dumps rubbish into the neighbour’s space or drains without guilt or conscience.

This list was compiled based on complaints and letters written in to StarMetro.

Let's make sure we here at 3Greens do not fall into any of the categories above. Cheers!

2009 in a Nutshell - Hannah Yeoh

Extract from Sj Echo ( Nov 4, 2009 ) by Hannah Yeoh

on Gated & Guarded

A special consultation session was held recently in MPSJ together with MPSJ councillors for USJ zone - Rajiv Rishyakaran and Arumugam A/L Kalimuthu (rep), USJ Residents’ Association and representatives from all over USJ 1 to USJ 23. The discussion focused mainly on ways to improve the current guidelines pertaining to gated & guarded scheme and brainstorming on ways to address the challenges and limitations of such a scheme.

MPSJ has started a sub-committee led by councillor Roslan Shahir, tasked at tackling gated & guarded scheme. A special state-wide town hall meeting will also be held by the Selangor State Government to look into this issue and how it affects every local council and residential community.

The Home Ministry must allocate more manpower and resources in urban constituencies such as Subang Jaya. The presence of policemen must be felt on the streets. We need an admission that security is a pivotal concern and there should not be an assignment of such a responsibility to foreign guards. Some residents have suggested that MPSJ should take up the role of the police by promoting or adopting crime prevention measures. While I personally think this is a good-to-have approach, we must not forget that ultimately the responsibility lies with the police force under the purview of the Home Ministry.

I do not think we should reinvent or delegate such a duty to other agencies such as MPSJ. MPSJ should focus on improving basic infrastructure amenities and ensuring sustainable development in our township.

I have said it many times and I will reiterate the same here – gated & guarded should not be a long term solution in reducing crime. Once the Home Ministry allocates sufficient manpower here, residents should not have to pay extra (in addition to their income tax!) for security guards anymore.

Meeting the Residents

Dear neighbours,

the 3 Greens USJ Pro-tem Comittee is happy to inform that we have now completed almost 2 months with our Gated and Guarded concept.
